One person, one conviction: no one — young or old — should be forgotten.
Checkmate Community started with young people. When we opened our doors in 2022, our heart was for children with a parent or loved one behind bars — kids at risk of inheriting a cycle they never chose. The goal was simple but bold: help them find work, build real skills, and even launch businesses of their own.
Along the way, I saw another group being quietly left behind — seniors in nursing homes and memory-care units going day after day without a song, a game, or a familiar face. I couldn't unsee it. So the mission grew.
Today, Checkmate Community pours most of its energy into brightening life for seniors across North Texas — the music, the bingo, the crafts, the holidays — while still standing with the young people we started with. Two generations, one belief: everyone deserves to feel seen.
